Fingal

Other Gold Coast:

Low key but high enjoyment

The seaside hamlet of Fingal just over the New South Wales border has superb sandy beaches with an interesting lighthouse walk.

Throw in a line, go camping, walk along the beach or have a picnic close to major river systems. Wollumbin or Mount Warning makes a sharp silhouette on the horizon.

Explore neighbouring coastal towns Kingscliff, river townships at Chinderah and Stotts Creek or head across Tweed scenic drives to Terranora, Tumbulgum, Bilambil and areas within the Terranora Broadwater.

The Minjungbal people inhabited the area because of its plentiful food. Later explorer John Oxley sheltered from a storm in the lee of Cook Island, 500m from Fingal Head in 1823.

Timbergetters worked the riverbank for cedar. The headland’s network of caves was considered a resting place for spirits and a sacred place by Aborigines. In past years, NSW Department of Works blew them up to ready access to rocks to build the river’s walls. You’ve heard it – paved paradise to put up a parking lot.

Location: South.

Orientation: South of Tweed border and north of Kingscliff and Cabarita.
